Hope wheels with Shimano 12 speed
In response to SRAM’s drive to add as many sprockets as possible to a mountain bike drivetrain, Shimano has made their 12 speed technology available on XT and SLX groupsets in addition to the lovely, but pricey, XTR. As with SRAM, a new Micro Spline freehub body was required to allow the fitting of the 10 tooth sprocket and this created a problem for Hope fans as, unlike SRAM and their XD driver, Shimano did not make Micro Spline an open standard.
Initially Shimano refused to allow Hope a licence to make Micro Spline freehubs for their range of hubs, saying they wanted to restrict the licenses to OEM manufacturers who must brand the hubs with the manufacturers name. Hope were unhappy that this rule was not being applied universally and they have now succeeded in obtaining the necessary licence and will begin production immediately.
So good news for owners of Hope wheels who want to upgrade to Shimano 12 speed, although Hope are not allowed to sell them until Jan 1st.
Bike Wheels Direct will be selling wheels with Micro Spline hubs from Jan 1st and we will sell the freehubs separately in our new wheel spares section which will be added to the site soon.
